“Dave’s here, man”

David McCoy, Vice President of Sales

We sat down with our new VP of Sales, David McCoy, to learn more about his background, what drew him to bitfreighter, and how his unique expertise can contribute to achieving our goal of transforming the freight industry.

The road to bitfreighter

After a stint as an insurance agent, David decided to align his work with his passion for tech and his interest in data analytics, and secured a role with DAT Freight & Analytics.

During his time with DAT, David gained a wealth of freight industry experience, ultimately becoming the senior account rep for the DAT TMS - one of the most commonly used TMS platforms in the country.

Throughout his tenure at DAT, David spent over 10 years traveling around the country, meeting with brokers, providers and shippers, and getting a firsthand view of the technological and administrative challenges that they face on a daily basis. Getting to know freighters all over the country, he learned about their pain points, developed a deep understanding of how their businesses operate and quickly began to see similarities in the desired solutions that would make each business run more efficiently.

On the most common gripe among the people he met, David said, “A recurring issue shared by almost all shippers was that they were stuck with this giant, monthly cost for EDI. They felt as though there was almost a monopoly on EDI in the industry, and many businesses felt that there was no way to get around this large cost from the one main vendor.”

After 12 years at DAT, having forged a wide network of close connections within the industry, David saw an opportunity to help revolutionize the way that his peers communicate with each other, to bring the industry into the digital age, and to dissolve the perceived EDI monopoly that so many freight businesses were hamstrung by.

“We’re going to cause a big disruption!”

Through his work in the industry, David has known bitfreighter CEO and Co-Founder, Brad Perling, for many years.

“I always admired the fact that, as a shipper himself, Brad didn’t just accept the rigid cost of EDI, the pain point that so many people share - instead, he decided to create a solution for it, which is bitfreighter.”

Future hockey stick growth at bitfreighter

“I’ve spoken with literally hundreds, if not thousands of people, who have told me that there is a real need for this product and this kind of tech. The opportunity to be a part of something new and exciting, something that’s a real game-changer, was too good to let slip.”

“bitfreighter is doing something special, something unique. I wanted to be a part of that!”

David says that the risk of leaving an established player for a disruptor attracted him to the role. One of the biggest challenges that a disruptor has is connecting with clients and businesses in the industry, which is where David believes that his large network of close contacts can be particularly useful.

“Even though we’re still small right now, it feels like we’re already making positive changes in the industry. We’re already developing new integration partnerships, and looking at many potential partnerships in the near future.”
